Vivre dans la Dignité and the Physicians’ Alliance against Euthanasia welcome the creation by the Canadian government, on July 17, of an external expert panel to study the questions of euthanasia and assisted suicide in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Carter decision, and to make recommendations to the government. The committee report is due at the end of the autumn.
Of the three panel members, two are prominent academics who have contributed greatly to improving the care of Canadians who are terminally ill or who live with disease or disability. Psychiatrist Harvey Max Chochinov, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care, is internationally renowned for his work promoting dignity and hope for people facing the end of life. Catherine Frazee is a writer, educator and activist for disability rights. Law professor Benoît Pelletier, with his known expertise in constitutional law, completes the panel.
We are encouraged that the government plans to study these crucial issues in depth before deciding on legislation. We look forward to working with the panel to promote the protection of Quebecers and all Canadians made vulnerable by age, disease or disability.
