Irene Ogrizek wrote Euthanasia: Putting the Elderly at Risk, a thought-provoking post about the risk to our elders with legalising euthanasia. In her post, Irene tells of how she carefully selected a nursing home for her mother, but despite her best effort, she found over a few years that her mother was medicated without authorization, and without notes in the medical chart. Only her hyper vigilance and continued follow-up with the nursing home resolved the situation, for now anyway. She believes this happened to make life easier for some of the nursing home staff, talking about “rogue healthcare workers”. She says:

I am worried about legalizing euthanasia because the chances are excellent that similar patterns will arise but with graver consequences.

Indeed, the chances of abuse with Bill 52 are great.
