That means that vulnerable seniors\u2019 lives will be ended when they are not asking for it and cannot consent to it because of a neurocognitive disorder. It is controversial even among those who promote MAiD.<\/p><p>Prominent MAiD provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianaffairs.news\/2024\/10\/29\/quebecs-legalization-of-advance-maid-requests-raises-legal-medical-concerns\/\">Dr. Claude Rivard<\/a> and others have said publicly that they are not at ease with ending the life of a person who cannot currently request it or consent to it, and who would need to be restrained or sedated in order to give the lethal injection.<\/p><p>MAiD without current consent remains prohibited by the Criminal Code of Canada. Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmq.org\/fr\/actualites\/notre-avis-entree-daamm\">Coll\u00e8ge des M\u00e9decins du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> and the Canadian Medical Protective Association have warned their members about the medicolegal implications of proceeding under the Quebec law.<\/p><p>However, the Government of Canada announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2024\/10\/statement-from-minister-of-health-and-the-minister-of-justice-and-the-attorney-general-of-canada-on-advance-requests-for-medical-assistance-in-dying.html\">they will not challenge the law<\/a>, and will launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying\/national-conversation-advance-requests.html\">\u201cnational conversation\u201d<\/a> on advance requests for MAiD from November 2024 to January 2025. Two months, with Christmas in the middle, for such a fraught discussion! This physician says no<\/a><\/li><li>CJAD radio, November 1, 2024. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/962-montreal-now-with-aaron-ra-96086768\/episode\/quebecs-new-maid-rule-misconstrues-the-233846243\/\">Quebec\u2019s new MAiD rule misconstrues the notion of informed consent<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>**<\/p><p>In Ontario, the Office of the Chief Coroner \u201cMedical Assistance in Dying Death Review Committee\u201d\u00a0released several reports on October 16, 2024. Among them, the report on <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.theconversation.com\/static_files\/files\/3518\/2024.3_NRFND_Vulnerability_Final_Report_%281%29.pdf?1729708747\">Navigating Vulnerability in Non-Reasonably Foreseeable Natural Deaths<\/a> reveals evidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/london\/new-report-shows-who-is-getting-medical-help-with-dying-despite-not-being-close-to-natural-death-1.7363801\">MAiD driven by poverty, marginalization and lack of support<\/a> for mental illness and disability.<\/p><p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/maid-and-marginalized-people-coroners-reports-shed-light-on-assisted-death-in-ontario-241661\">excellent analysis by Dr. Karandeep Sonu Gaind<\/a> in The Conversation.<\/p><p>Also the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zbTQR2ND_Y0\">The disturbing truth of Canada\u2019s euthanasia program<\/a> with Peter Copeland and Dr. Ramona Coelho, a member of the committee.<\/p><p>On November 14 at 8:00 pm EST, Dr. Coelho and human rights lawyer David Shannon, also a member of the committee, will give an online lecture entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deveber.org\/fall-lectures\/\">Are Safeguards Safe: Grave Concerns Regarding MAiD<\/a>, organized by the deVeber Institute.
