{"id":6017,"date":"2022-12-23T06:24:54","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T11:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/collectif.lesartsmartial.com\/?p=6017"},"modified":"2025-08-12T00:16:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:16:55","slug":"physicians-alliance-newsletter-december-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/physicians-alliance-newsletter-december-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Physicians&#8217; Alliance Newsletter, December 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the end of 2022 approaches, Canadians and the world are becoming more and more alarmed at the dramatic expansion of euthanasia in our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10,000 people died through \u201cmedical assistance in dying\u201d in Canada in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the latest report of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/fr\/news-releases\/depot-du-rapport-annuel-2021-2022-de-la-commission-sur-les-soins-de-fin-de-vie-le-quebec-continue-de-bien-faire-les-choses-en-matiere-d-aide-medicale-a-mourir-854666793.html\">Commission on end-of-life care<\/a>, Quebec has become the euthanasia capital of the world. 5.1% of deaths were through MAiD in 2021-2022, compared to 4.8% in the Netherlands and 2.3% in Belgium, countries where it has been legal for over 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more cases are coming to light of MAiD without adequate consent and of people requesting death through MAiD because of poverty, homelessness and a lack of medical and social support, as can be seen in this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-toronto-7c631558a457188d2bd2b5cfd360a867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>&nbsp;article and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vivredignite.org\/en\/2022\/10\/press-review-new-access-to-maid-abuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many others<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/no-other-options\">This article<\/a>&nbsp;is well worth reading in its entirety, including the links to&nbsp;CAMAP (<a>Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers<\/a>) videos. It shows that the euthanasia lobby is well aware that some Canadians are being pushed toward MAiD because of poverty and social isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A commentary about this investigation, echoing similar concerns about poverty being a driving force for MAiD:&nbsp;<a><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/the-assisted-suicide-doctors-who-admit-patients-are-driven-by-poverty?fbclid=IwAR22HHrGrnSQ7qHFvoQE-LqZPypStGvd4BDD7-Dzlx_90NIUSYL9BoZA7bs\">The assisted suicide doctors who freely admit their patients are driven by poverty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from the UK:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/canadas-assisted-dying-catastrophe-is-a-warning-to-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada\u2019s assisted dying catastrophe is a warning to Britain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Simons clothing store moved into the promotion of euthanasia, and then a news report taught us that the disabled woman in their video had said publicly a few months earlier that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vivredignite.org\/en\/2022\/12\/she-wanted-to-live-jennyfer-hatch-story\/\">she was seeking MAiD because of a lack of support from the health care system<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally some comment from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledroit.com\/2022\/12\/07\/laide-medicale-a-mourir-nest-pas-un-outil-de-branding-6a83a0575be1c72091c678a3d3396a13?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Facebook&amp;fbclid=IwAR2chx10TAJvqk3Jsq9Z_wXC5GnCHdAEla4hzCtOdrdBF80BHLHheJsGFV0#Echobox=1670422507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">francophone press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parl.ca\/Committees\/en\/AMAD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;has wrapped up its hearings, but the report will only be tabled in February 2023. Recently the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/canada-should-delay-maid-for-people-with-mental-disorders-psychiatrists-1.6177908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chairs of psychiatry at all Canadian faculties of medicine<\/a>&nbsp;called for a delay, citing among other worrisome elements the impossibility of determining irremediability in mental illness. At the same time, several of our colleagues took part in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nw9d8nF-5CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">panel on TV Ontario<\/a>, explaining their concerns about such expansion.&nbsp;On December 15, the government responded. Justice Minister David Lametti announced legislation to delay the deadline. It is the only responsible thing to do. See this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/canada-delays-expanding-medical-assistance-in-dying-to-include-mental-illness-but-its-still-a-policy-built-on-quicksand-196264\">commentary by psychiatrist Dr. Sonu Gaind<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other urgent pleas include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archdisabilitylaw.ca\/disability-rights-groups-call-for-public-hearing-on-canadas-maid-law-at-international-human-rights-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocacy by the disability community<\/a>&nbsp;for protection from MAiD laws and the outcry over veterans being offered MAiD by Veterans Affairs employees when they are seeking help. As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/opinion\/contributors\/2022\/12\/08\/on-maid-either-we-all-matter-or-none-of-us-do.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. John Maher<\/a>&nbsp;observed, the outcry is valid, but what about the rest of Canadians whose lives are put equally at risk by the MAiD law?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Qu\u00e9bec we expect the government to table a new bill in 2023 similar to the failed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/communique-de-presse-du-collectif-des-medecins-re-depot-du-projet-de-loi-38\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill 38<\/a>, which would allow euthanasia by advance request for people incapable of decision-making, as well as requiring all private palliative care homes to provide MAiD. The Quebec College wants to go even farther, advocating for euthanasia for mental illness and for newborns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some colleagues and I recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/open-letter-to-dr-mauril-gaudreault-president-and-the-board-of-directors-of-the-college-des-medecins-du-quebec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed our concerns to the College<\/a>&nbsp;about their position, but have so far not received any response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group Physicians Together with Vulnerable Canadians is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/b2e6b0bbdb86\/request-for-help-from-ontario-colleagues?e=4485a8655f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocating in Ontario<\/a>&nbsp;to improve safeguards for patients and to promote conscience rights for physicians. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please take a moment to contact your federal and provincial elected representatives to express your concerns about the dizzying expansion of MAiD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We take this opportunity to wish all our members and supporters joy in all your celebrations this holiday season.
