{"id":4632,"date":"2018-12-14T16:37:36","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T21:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/collectif.lesartsmartial.com\/?p=4632"},"modified":"2025-08-12T00:20:56","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:20:56","slug":"report-on-euthanasia-extension-to-vulnerable-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/report-on-euthanasia-extension-to-vulnerable-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Report on euthanasia extension to vulnerable groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear friends,<\/p>\n<p>The long-awaited report of the <strong><em>Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) Expert Panel on MAID\u00a0requests by mature minors, advance requests, and requests where a mental disorder is the sole underlying medical condition<\/em><\/strong>, was released on December 12, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><em>Physicians\u2019 Alliance against Euthanasia<\/em><\/strong> was one of 59 groups that submitted testimony to the Panel.<\/p>\n<p>The three reports (each extending to over 200 pages) propose a review of the state of knowledge on these three topics, and give no recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer to read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceadvice.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/MAID-Summary-of-Reports.pdf\">Summary<\/a>, it is 62 pages long.<\/p>\n<p>The working group on <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceadvice.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/The-State-of-Knowledge-on-Medical-Assistance-in-Dying-for-Mature-Minors.pdf\">MAID\u00a0requests by mature minors<\/a><\/em><\/strong> concluded that \u201cthere<em> are many gaps in knowledge that make it difficult to arrive at definitive answers<\/em>.&#8221; and that &#8220;<em>The view that minors are in need of heightened protection is a widely shared concern<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the working group on <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceadvice.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/The-State-of-Knowledge-on-Advance-Requests-for-Medical-Assistance-in-Dying.pdf\">advance requests for MAID<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, &#8220;<em>removing a requirement for express consent immediately prior to the MAID procedure raises the possibility that a person might receive MAID against their wishes<\/em>.&#8221; It goes on to state that &#8220;<em>A judgment\u2026 would need to consider the inherent tensions among values of respecting autonomy, alleviating suffering and protecting against vulnerabilities\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The report of the working group on <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceadvice.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/The-State-of-Knowledge-on-Medical-Assistance-in-Dying-Where-a-Mental-Disorder-is-the-Sole-Underlying-Medical-Condition.pdf\"><strong><em>MAID requests where a mental disorder is the sole underlying medical condition<\/em><\/strong><\/a> highlighted major disagreements among working group members on essential points, including how to weigh outcomes;\u00a0whether there is an\u00a0ethical distinction between choosing MAID when death is imminent vs. choosing to die when one may have many years still to live; and whether one can distinguish between a desire for suicide and\u00a0a request\u00a0for MAID in a person with a mental disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The response of the Canadian Government to these reports, less than a year before the next election, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>We encourage all members and supporters of the <strong><em>Physicians\u2019 Alliance against Euthanasia<\/em><\/strong>, especially those who have specific expertise related to these three areas of potential extension of euthanasia, to study the reports and make their views known to politicians and the media.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Ferrier<br \/>\nPresident<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear friends, The long-awaited report of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) Expert Panel on MAID\u00a0requests by mature minors, advance requests, and requests where a mental disorder is the sole underlying medical condition, was released on December 12, 2018.
