Unfortunately, this moral duty is not evenly honoured around the world. In Canada, we would like to see that same attention and urgency given to the desires of non-suicidal patients as we see presently accorded to those of the suicidal minority.<\/li>\n<li>Dying with Dignity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/assisted-dying-religion-ethics-accessibility-1.4244328\">may challenge Ontario law exempting religious hospitals from offering assisted death<\/a>. Such a change would further reduce available choices for non-suicidal patients.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates to the annual assembly of the CMA <a href=\"http:\/\/cmajnews.com\/2017\/08\/23\/physicians-support-assisted-death-for-mature-minors-but-not-mental-illness-109-5491\/\">supported a motion to extend the application of Canadian euthanasia law<\/a>. Serious questions thus arise concerning the legitimacy of the CMA in representing the true sentiments of Canadian doctors, of whom over two thirds have said they will not participate in the euthanasia programme.<\/li>\n<li>In Quebec, <a href=\"http:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1052973\/aide-medicale-mourir-bataille-judiciaire-avance-lentement?fromBeta=true\">euthanasia activists are attempting to do away with the condition<\/a> that a suicidal patient\u2019s natural death must be reasonably foreseeable in order to access state suicide assistance. The Canadian Justice minister would like to demonstrate that this condition does not infringe the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A failure in this contest would represent a further erosion of Canadian democratic will and process in favor of legislation by decree from an unelected activist judiciary.<\/li>\n<li>In Shawville\u00a0QC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicregister.org\/item\/25944-wife-alleges-quebec-doctor-let-her-husband-die\">a family has made a formal complaint against the hospital<\/a> after a non-suicidal cancer patient, still far from the terminal stage, allegedly had his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2017\/08\/its-a-culture-war-stupid\">life ended by a doctor who refused to treat his bladder infection<\/a>, pretexting that it would be \u201c(sic) better to die of this now than of cancer later\u2026\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A pathetic account from Belgium where the latest proposed legislation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genethique.org\/fr\/belgique-vers-leuthanasie-des-personnes-fatiguees-de-vivre-68077.html#.WbMxXNSGPIU\">would enable state assisted suicide for seniors<\/a> who are \u201c(sic) tired of living\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Detailed list (the only one we\u2019ve seen) <a href=\"http:\/\/consciencelaws.org\/background\/procedures\/assist017.aspx\">of the statistics on euthanasia in Quebec since the law came into effect<\/a>, by the Protection of Conscience Project. Several establishments have not yet published their statistics despite being required by the law to do so.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpa-apc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/CPA-MAIDTF-16Surv-Rep-FIN-EN.pdf\">Canadian Psychiatric Association member survey<\/a>: the majority is in favour of \u201cmedical aid in dying\u201d, but 54% oppose it if mental illness is the sole source of suffering.<\/li>\n<li>Canadian Mental Health Association <a href=\"https:\/\/cmha.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/CMHA-Position-Paper-on-Medical-Assistance-in-Dying-FINAL.pdf\">Says No to Medical Assistance in Dying<\/a> Solely on the Basis of Mental Illness<\/li>\n<li>The American College of Physicians\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/annals.org\/aim\/article\/2654458\/ethics-legalization-physician-assisted-suicide-american-college-physicians-position-paper\">takes a clear stand against assisted suicide<\/a>:<\/li>\n<li>Manitoba is one place where the right of hospitals to refuse euthanasia is protected by law. But in this report, as usual, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/local\/assisted-dying-policies-will-be-reviewed-at-all-facilities-health-minister-442803783.html\">all opposition to euthanasia is falsely qualified as \u201cfaith based\u201d<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Doctors in the Netherlands remind us that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.genethique.org\/fr\/aux-pays-bas-les-medecins-rappellent-que-leuthanasie-nest-pas-un-droit-68235.html#.WcvFOtSGPIU\">euthanasia is not a right<\/a>\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #a60808; font-family: georgia;\"><b>From the trenches<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: georgia; margin-left: 40px;\">\n<p><!--Ensure that this\n\n\n<div>\n\n remains after the text has been inserted--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfp.ca\/content\/63\/8\/584\">What\u2019s the prognosis, doc?<\/a> Dr. Roger Ladouceur reflects in the Canadian Family Physician on how poor we often are at predicting a patient\u2019s prognosis, a serious problem now that we have a law in which euthanasia is permitted for those expected to die soon.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/extend-medical-assistance-in-dying-to-incapacitated-persons-91-of-caregivers-asked-say-yes-646445683.html\">a survey of 306 family caregivers of people with Alzheimer disease<\/a>, 91% are in favour of euthanasia by advance request.<\/p>\n<p>Excellent commentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2017\/09\/27\/leuthanasie-pour-tous\">by Mathieu Bock-C\u00f4t\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genethique.org\/fr\/maladie-de-charcot-nous-ne-nous-reconnaissons-pas-dans-la-demande-danne-bert-68221.html#.Wcu-99SGPIU\">Heated discussion in France about euthanasia<\/a> in cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), after the public statement of a writer diagnosed with the disease.
