Thus, the Quebec euthanasia law, which came into force on December 10, 2015, is formally approved by the Supreme Court of Canada. <a href=\"http:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/an-extension-for-the-federal-government-and-an-exemption-for-quebec\/\">Read more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>January 14,\u00a02016<\/strong>: media outlets report\u00a0first official case of euthanasia in Quebec<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>January 4,\u00a02016<\/strong>: the Quebec Court of Appeal stated that the Criminal Code provisions that still prohibit &#8220;medical aid in dying&#8221; can not, by themselves, prevent the entry into force and implementation of euthanasia in Quebec since they were declared invalid by the Supreme Court of Canada in the Carter decision. <a href=\"http:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/the-quebec-court-of-appeal-judgment-does-not-end-the-dispute\/\">Read more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>December 18,\u00a02015<\/strong>: hearing of the Government of Quebec appeal regarding the incompatibility of its articles related to &#8220;medical aid in dying&#8221; with the Criminal Code of Canada. The decision of the Court of Appeal is expected soon but at this point we do not know the exact date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>December 10,\u00a02015<\/strong>: given the temporary suspension of the judgment of the Superior Court pending the decision of the Court of Appeal, the Quebec Government announces that the articles related to &#8220;medical aid in dying&#8221; are coming into force pending the verdict of the Court of Appeal, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmpa-acpm.ca\/en\/web\/guest\/-\/what-the-supreme-court-of-canada-decision-on-physician-assisted-dying-means-for-physicians\">cannot guarantee total immunity to doctors who participate in a process of euthanasia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>December 9,\u00a02015<\/strong>: the <a href=\"http:\/\/collectifmedecins.org\/en\/court-authorizes-quebec-to-appeal-the-decision-of-the-superior-court\/\">Quebec Court of Appeal allows the Quebec Government to challenge the judgment<\/a> of the Superior Court at a hearing on December 18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>December 1st,\u00a02015<\/strong>: The Quebec Superior Court <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/quebec-end-of-life-care-1.3345572\">renders inoperative all the articles of the Quebec Act related to &#8220;medical aid in dying&#8221;<\/a>, which were to take effect on December 10, declaring them incompatible with the Canadian Criminal Code until the Federal Government implements a new law to frame the decision of the Supreme Court to legalize assisted suicide in Canada.
