WORLD MEDICAL ASSOCIATION REAFFIRMS OPPOSITION TO EUTHANASIA AND PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE

Dear friends,

After an extensive worldwide consultation over a period of several years, the World Medical Association (WMA) reaffirmed on Saturday, October 26, at its Annual Assembly in Tbilisi, Georgia, its opposition to euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide.

You may recall that at the October 2018 annual assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Canadian and Dutch medical associations proposed a draft resolution that the WMA adopt a neutral stance regarding the ethics of these acts. They met with overwhelming opposition, and the motion was ...

In what sort of world do we wish to live? October 2019 Newsletter of the Physicians’ Alliance against Euthanasia

Photo courtest of Toujours Vivant-Not Dead Yet

It is with the greatest regret that we acknowledge the decision rendered on September 11, 2019 by Quebec Superior Court Justice Christine Baudouin, validating the claims of Nicole Gladu and Jean Truchon. Subsequent to this judgment, if it is not appealed by one or both of the defendants (the Attorneys General of Canada and of Quebec), ...

Call to action! Open letter to sign and share

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am writing to bring your attention to a letter written by a group of medical professionals who are advisors to the Vulnerable Persons Standard  (http://www.vps-npv.ca/). The letter calls on the Attorney General of Canada to appeal a recent Quebec Superior Court decision that struck down the end of life criterion in Canada’s medical assistance in dying legislation. The authors are concerned about the far-reaching implications of this decision – both within medicine and ...

“Just kill yourself”-Letter by Dr. Marc Beauchamp on suicide and euthanasia

For a rapidly growing number of decision-makers and opinion makers, this would be the implicit message of opponents of assisted suicide and euthanasia (i.e. medical aid in dying, MAiD).  If I understand this new definition of humanism correctly, allowing a person to commit suicide on their own is cruelty, so it must be done through an expert in the field, professionally. According to this reasoning, any request to die should indeed be taken care of by the medical profession (here ...

In what sort of world do we wish to live?

It is with the greatest regret that we acknowledge the decision rendered on September 11, 2019, by Quebec Superior Court Justice Christine Baudouin, validating the claims of Nichole Gladu and Jean Truchon. Subsequent to this judgement (and assuming that the Federal Government not demand a politically damaging Canada-vs-Quebec appeal), requirements that euthanasia subjects be “at the end of life” or that their natural death be “reasonably foreseeable” will soon be struck from Quebec and Canadian law.

All that will remain, then, ...

Truchon-Gladu case: Reaction to the judgment of the Superior Court of Quebec and call to action

Dear members and supporters of the Physicians’ Alliance against Euthanasia,

As you probably already know, the Superior Court of Quebec, in a decision delivered on September 11, invalidated the end-of-life and reasonably foreseeable natural death criteria as conditions of access to “medical assistance in dying” (MAiD) in Quebec and Canada. We deplore this judgment, which will have negative consequences for the most vulnerable people and will directly affect the mission of our health care institutions.

In a rather summary manner, the ...

positive.

On June 10th, the American Medical Association (one of the world’s largest and most influential National Medical Associations), voted to retain its opposition to euthanasia and assisted suicide. This decision followed an exhaustive 18 month review, and three successive recommendations from the AMA Committee on Ethics and Judicial Affairs; the final vote was 360-190 in favour of accepting ...

Conscience rights of physicians – Decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal (2): June 2019 Newsletter of the Physicians’ Alliance against Euthanasia

All doctors are needed

On May 15, 2019, the Court of Appeal for Ontario confirmed a lower court ruling defending the requirement of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) that dissenting physicians make “effective referrals” for euthanasia (“MAiD”).

We consider this decision to be not only wrong, but founded upon non-factual assumptions, contrary to the needs of patients, and contrary to the opinion of ...
